Families As We Are

Awards

On Tuesday June 12, 2001, Perdita Huston was presented with a Special Human Rights Award by the United Nations Association of the National Capitol Area. The text of this award follows:

Special Human Rights Award for

Perdita Huston

for her remarkable contribution to understanding of the human condition through her book, Families As We Are, an eloquent global social history of our times. Through this inspiring book, she broadens our knowledge of the family as the primary institution of mutual help and encouragement in the hardships and tragedies that befall all people. She proves that the family, broadly defined, merits maximum support from human rights, social, and educational policy everywhere. The case for such support has never been more powerfully made. For this, we and the rest of the world's families owe her our gratitude.

"This time [Perdita Huston] has brought us proof that the value of kinship bonds and the dram of loving families are strong and enduring across continents, cultures, and generations."

- Dr. Dorothy Height, Chair, National Council of Negro Women
